WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF

BEURSSCHOUWBURG

Transdisciplinary art centre Beursschouwburg evolves on the crossroads of creativity, reflection and questioning. As a key player in the Brussels art scene Beursschouwburg stimulates all kinds of interaction between the living arts, the broader cultural debate and social city life. A continuous dialogue is being developed between the artists, critics, professionals and audiences. A dialogue about the arts, but also about life, society and man. As a catalyst for both the creative expression of the individual artist and the active commitment of the audiences, Beursschouwburg feeds the everlasting search for meaning and significance, across every possible boundary of ideology, religion, culture and gender.

Every new season comes with a delightful kind of tension. Some projects are abandoned, new ideas and concepts replace them. The season 2009-2010 is built upon three strong pillars:

  • The new BITS(&pieces) festival is stretching and testing the ‘dance’ idiom;
  • For its third edition, music festival JustJAZZIt breathes an Italian vibe;
  • And the ON Y DANSE TOUT EN ROND Festival of Confusion offers two weeks choke full of cross-over.

If you like a good surprise, you’ll love the new kaleidoscopic project S.H.O.W. (Shit Happens On Wednesdays). Each Wednesday, another artist attacks with a new injection of DIY-art, lo-fi, prank or experimentation. They’ve only this in common: they’re unexpected, diverse and oh joy: free! DocHouse Brussels remains this city’s main forum for vanguard cinematic documentaries. Lovers of rock and all its subgenres will be delighted to rediscover new series of Soundbits (in collaboration with VK* Concerts) and Springboard Sessions. We’re continuing our collaboration with Met-X for the DiasporaSounds cycle and with two emerging festivals: Working Title, by Working Space Brussels, and Bâtard, festival for young talents of the performing arts. In October, Hans Bryssinck, Diederik

Peeters and Danai Anesiadou kick off their residency at the Beursschouwburg with a new theatrical creation. During the KunstenFestivaldesArts another of our artists in residence, Pieter De Buysser joins forces with Dominique Pauwels and Inne Goris. They will reflect upon the fall of the Wall in - to put it mildly - a controversial fashion. However great your cultural appetite, the Beursschouwburg’s next season is certain to satisfy you. CONTOUR VZW MECHELEN

Top-rate international contemporary art, moving image in different formats, history in content and architecture, and all the time in the world to watch. That sums up Contour 2009.

Mechelen (BEL) hosts a unique initiative for people with an interest in contemporary art as well as architectural history. The biennial presents artists working with film, video and installation in special locations in the historical inner city of Mechelen; unexpected or unusual venues within walking distance from one another.

The fourth edition bears the mark of the Brussels-based curator Katerina Gregos (GRC). Under the title ‘Hidden In Remembrance Is The Silent Memory Of Our Future’, the exhibition probes history, advocates its importance and revolves around questions of historical representation and historiography. Gregos invited 18 artists from 12 countries who investigate the complex entanglements between past, present and future.

Contour 2009 takes place twenty years after the fall of the Berlin wall. Since then developments occur at a more accelerated pace. According to curator Katerina Gregos: “We are at a point where we believe that the past cannot teach us anything, which is a precarious view. It is now more urgent than ever before to negotiate the present through an understanding of the past. This is also evident in a growing number of artists whose work mines history and explores notions such as time, memory, and remembrance.”

The exhibition features recent and new work by Belgian and international artists, established as well as upcoming. Highlights include the Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila, arguably one of the most accomplished artists currently working in video, and the internationally acclaimed Belgian artist Michaël Borremans, whose ‘Taking Turns’ has its Belgian première.

Contour presents visually engaging and intellectually stimulating art, aiming to reach a wide as well as specialist public. Tickets are valid for the whole duration of the exhibition, since there is more than can be seen in one day, and enough to be discovered repeatedly. At the starting point of the exhibition is a work which is freely accessible to all: the film of Israeli artist Yael Bartana touches a part of history with a highly topical value, particularly for Mechelen.

THE PEOPLE'S CINEMA

The People’s Cinema is a flexible, mobile presentation platform devoted to work by contemporary artists working with the moving image, including all kinds of film, video, and screen-based practices. The People’s Cinema will focus on recent work, new productions, or work that has not previously been seen in Belgium, functioning as a barometer for all that is cutting edge in artists’ film and video, and highlighting new developments in the moving image.

The People’s Cinema begins with the premise that some of the most interesting work in contemporary art today is being produced in the moving image, a medium that has reached great prominence in recent years and where multiple forms of creativity and discursiveness are being engendered and developed.

The People’s Cinema will present emerging as well as established artists working with moving image, with an international focus. It will showcase artists who are developing distinct visual or cinematographic styles as well as artists whose work is grounded in social and political practices, and explores diverse documentary narratives. The People’s Cinema will present artists who adopt a wide range of formal, conceptual and presentational approaches to the moving image, drawing upon its unique ability to combine multiple disciplines and languages.

In an environment where so much work in moving image is misappropriately installed, The People’s Cinema will also be concerned with the creating the proper viewing conditions for works in the moving image.

In a nutshell, The People’s Cinema will present cutting-edge new works, by artists that are contributing to the development of the moving image and forging their own unique languages and discourses. The People’s Cinema will present single artists as well as curated projects.

The People’s Cinema will not operate from a fixed venue but will present projects in collaboration with various institutions, in different locations in Brussels and other cities in Belgium, and on occasion, abroad. In that sense it will also be a testing ground for different contexts, audiences, neighbourhoods and publics

DOCAGORA

DocAgora is an open space to consider new forms, new platforms, new tools, and new ways of financing creative and socially engaged documentary media - what we call docmedia.

We believe that documentary is the hot now media. Documentary makers are adapting to a rapidly changing mediascape shifting beneath their reality-based feet.

Since DocAgora's launch in November, 2006 at IDFA, we've been talking about the profound changes transforming the creation and distribution of classic theatrical, educational and broadcast documentary.

We are also showcasing and celebrating trans-platform digital documentary in all of its incarnations : cyberdocs, netcasting, interactive docs. We have produced sessions on cross-platform documentary media, like the Convergence Lab in Aril, 2008, and have also taken on made-for-mobile docs, real-life docugames, and animated documations.

In this international zeitgeist, the very definition of documentary itself is morphing into something wider, more exciting and challenging. We believe this Webplex is the place to discuss what this all means to the Documentary world.

We welcome our whole community : new and established docmedia makers, producers, distributors, funders, broadcasters, niche-casters, webmakers, creatives, crews, festivals, markets, sales agents, foundations, institutions, educators, students, viewers, producers, NGO's, non-profits and marketeers - into one progressive place.
