ANGELO LOY
(1966) documentary director
In his previous existence he was a PhD biologist at the University of Rome.
In 1996 he coproduces Emanuele Crialese's ("Respiro", "The Golden Door", Silver Lion in Venice 2006) first feature film "Once We Were Strangers". Since then, he's been working in producing, directing and editing documentaries. Starting from 2000, he collaborates with AMREF (the African Medical and Research Foundation) in the attempt to find new and original ways of communicating Africa through mainstream media. In this context he promoted (along with Giulio Cederna and John Muiruri) a rehabilitation and video training project ("Different Perspective") that produced several participatory documentaries for national and international broadcasters.

For his activities in the field, he has been awarded with the "Premio Cinema del Reale 2006" (Real Cinema Award) and "Premio Cinema per la Pace 2006" (Cinema for Peace Award).
He currently teaches documentary directing and participatory video at ESODOC's seminar and ZELIG Documentary Film, Televison and New Media School, Bolzano, Italy.

" Director /Producer - Fiumaroli (Ita, 2000, 16mm, 37'). The story of the last families of fishermen in the river Tiber of Rome. Special Mention of the Italian Association of Scientific Cinematography 2000.

" Director/Editor/Camera - Manifesto for a Responsible Fishery (Ita, 2001, video, 30'), Manifesto for an Alternative Finance (Ita, 2003, Video, 26') e The Enterprise of a Different Finance (Ita, 2004, video 24'). Documentaries on the experiences of sustainable practices in Italy.

" Director/Editor/Camera - The Island within the Island (Ita, 2001, video 30'). Produced by Domenico Procacci for Fandango. The backstage of "Respiro", a feature film by Emanuele Crialese, entirely filmed in the remote island of Lampedusa.

" Director/Camera - Black Pinocchio (Ita, 2004, video 80', 70', 52'). Three years of the events that brought a group of Nairobi's street boys to perform theatrically in Africa and Western countries. Produced by Amref Italy, INDIGO FILM, with the support of MEDIA Development Fund, in collaboration with National Geographic Channel. Locarno International Film Festival 2005. Distributed by National Geographic Channel in more than 140 countries (premiered Sept. 15th, 2005), ARTE FRANCE (premiered Jan. 10th, 2008), SVT Sweden, RAI TRE, Italy (premiered Dec. 21, 2006), EDUCATIONAL DIGITAL, UK. " Director/Editor - A Different perspective (2007, Ita/Kenya, video 26'). A small crew of former street boys and girls from a slum of Nairobi reporting from the World Congress on Communcation for Development, in Rome 2006. Produced by AMREF in collaboration with the World Bank.

" Director/Editor/Camera - Mapenzi Tamu (The Good Love, Ita 2007, video 24'). A musical theatre experience on HIV AIDS interpreted by former street boys and girls from Nairobi. Produced by AMREF Italy in collaboration with Teatro al Parco/Teatro delle Briciole, Parma.

" Director/Editor - Brothers of Pen and Paper (Fra/Kenya/Ita, 2007, video 10' e 1', produced by AMREF Italia and UNESCO). A participatory documentary on the relationship between literacy and health care in urban and rural Kenya. Official short film for UNESCO's International Literacy Day 2007.

" Director/Camera - Water in Nairobi and The Deforestation of the Poor (Ita, 2007, produced by the Italian Public Broadcasting Corporation, RAITRE). Inquiry on the situation of water management in Nairobi and the effects of deforestation in rural Kenya (broadcasted by RAITRE, Italy, August 14th, 2007).

" Co-author (with Emanuele Crialese) - The Black Drop (2008, the origins of the New World, La goccia nera, le origini del Nuovomondo). Subject for a documentary film on eugenics, migrants and traditions.

" Coordinator/Editor - Malkia - Queens (Ita, video, 40', 2008, produced by AMREF Italy, Provincia di Parma, Fondazione Cariparma, Fondazione Lettera27, Teatro delle Briciole-Solares Fondazone delle Arti). Through a theatre experience, a street girl tells her story. A participatory documentary entirely filmed by former street boys and girls.

" In progress as author - ZION. Treatment for a feature film. In the scenario of a slum of Nairobi, the story of a reconciliation with life through the passion for hip hop music. With the lyrics of the group of actors and former street boys and girls and the music of Paolo Fresu.

" In progress as director - The Turkish Perspective (Lo sguardo dei Turchi, produced by AMREF Italy, the Bank of Sicily Foundation, 52'). Palermo, its life and problems, as seen through the eyes of a group of former street boys who have become videographers.

" In progress as director - Millenium News (video 8 x 7', produced by AMREF Italy and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The UN Millenium Development Goals explained and interpreted by a group of 80 boys and girls from the slums of Nairobi. A participatory project ironically restyling a mainstream news magazine.
